Fields Avenue, Balibago Angeles City, Philippines.

Situated in the heart of Balibago is the famous and some would even say infamous Fields Avenue. Fields Avenue, the girlie bars and the LBFM who work in them have been around since the fifties and are a direct result of the American servicemen being based in Clark Airfield. The term LBFM was used mainly by US servicemen particularly in Angles City Philippines and naval personnel in Subic Philippines. Another key aspect of the term LBFM is that it infers a certain compliancy among the people it is referring to. The foreign man will always draw comparisons between the women of his own country and the Asian women. On the whole the Asian women seem to come out on top for a variety of reasons not the least of which is the LBFM experience. Thirdly the girl (LBFM) is used to a certain lifestyle which includes a vibrant nightlife, drinking and hanging out with her friends, shopping in air conditioned malls and even sleeping in comfortable hotel rooms with all the modern amenities. In the province she (LBFM) will have none of this, the lifestyle will be more simplistic and the chances are she (LBFM) will become bored and consequently unhappy living in that environment. The next option which is often touted is taking her (LBFM) back to your country. This has the following advantages. Firstly you can spend time together and let the relationship blossom and develop in an environment which you are familiar with. Secondly in a foreign environment you can to a greater extent control the influences on your partner (LBFM) plus a Filipina (LBFM) in the right environment can improve her education and can learn new things as well as develop a broader outlook on life. The Filipina (LBFM) in most cases is nothing if not adaptable and a foreign environment will often provide the opportunities for her (LBFM) to make something better out of her (LBFM) life. Thirdly, when in a foreign environment the Filipina (LBFM) is dependent on you and you have more control of the situation than you would in her country. Lastly and perhaps most importantly the Filipina (LBFM) will in a foreign country often have opportunities to earn her (LBFM) own money which she (LBFM) can send back to support the family rather than relying on yours. The Filipino family will of course be happy that their daughter is overseas as they will view this as an opportunity for her (LBFM) to send even more money home and then one day maybe act as a sponsor to bring other family members to the country where she (LBFM) is now residing. This means less pressure on you to support the family.

There are also a number of disadvantages to taking your girl (LBFM) back to your country. Firstly she (LBFM) is in a foreign environment and will be at first totally dependent on you which although beneficial in some ways can also get to be problematic in other ways. Most importantly the girl has a set of friends in the bar (LBFM) whom are all in similar situations as herself. This means she (LBFM) will always have someone to talk with and relate to.

Of course there are many disadvantages to leaving your girl (LBFM) in the bar with the primary one being she will always be tempted to go bar fine (LBFM) or have sex with another man (LBFM). This may include consuming alcohol on a regular basis, late hours and solid partying, peer pressure to visit Filipino guys when they visit the macho dancer bars, exposure to lesbian tomboys, exposure to foreign customers who sees any girl (lbfm) working in the bar as being available (lbfm) and a host of other factors. This is the bar world warts and all, and whilst for you it may not be a real one, for them it is their reality and they live it night after night.

Lastly I think it is important to note that once a girl (lbfm) has a foreigner supporting her this girl (lbfm) will be seen as a provider amongst the group that hasn’t got the support. She (lbfm) will be expected to share her good fortune by buying a few things, taking the girls (lbfm) out and of course loaning money should it be needed. Of course she (lbfm) can never ask for it back or she (lbfm) will be told she is stuck up or she thinks she (lbfm) is better than her peers just because she (lbfm) has money or because she (lbfm) is just expected to wait and understand that it is easy to borrow money but hard to pay it back because of the borrowers ‘situation’.

Another option is to live with the girl (lbfm) here and this, just like all the other options, has its own advantages and disadvantages. Among the advantages are the fact that you get to spend a lot of time together plus the cost of living is generally cheaper than in ones own country. Other advantages include the fact that the girl (lbfm) is an environment she (lbfm) is familiar with and will not be so dependant on you. This can take a lot of pressure off a relationship. Another advantage is that because of the extended family concept being so dominant in the Philippines chances are your girl (lbfm) will most likely have a well established family support network which I have found certainly makes living in the Philippines more pleasurable and easy. Living in the Philippines in some ways performs the function of an insurance policy. Basically there is less competition from the younger foreigner males, the girl (lbfm) is in a near constant state of anticipation hoping she (lbfm) can get to your country and a better life plus if the relationship fails there are many more options for the man than in his own country. In the Philippines the older foreigner amongst Filipinas is still something sought after, unlike in his own country.

Of course living in the Philippines with your girl (lbfm) is not all a bed of roses. For starters even though she (lbfm) may be familiar and totally comfortable with the Filipino culture the foreigner will not be. There will always be the constant demand for money from a seemingly endless number of sources, you will experience a language barrier and little idiosyncrasies that can make life in the Philippines with your girl (lbfm) extremely frustrating. Other disadvantages include the fact that her (lbfm) friends will be constantly there trying to drag your girl (lbfm) back to the life she was leading before (lbfm) and exerting continual influence on the relationship, the girls (lbfm) insecurity will often come into play as she (lbfm) experiences jealousy and tries to restrict her mans movements. On another side the young Filipino guys will soon find out she (lbfm) is with a foreigner and they will assume she (lbfm) is fare game (lbfm). The natural assumption from them is she (lbfm) is only with the foreigner for money and in reality she (lbfm) wants the love of a young Filipino male. Of course to get this attention and love she (lbfm) will have to literally buy it and once again money will come into the equation. Lastly, for foreigners there are very few opportunities to make money in the Philippines which will in the end inevitably strain the relationship with your girl (lbfm).

As you can see there are many advantages and disadvantages to each option and it is not my business to recommend one particular option over the other but rather just to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each and in so doing help readers make a more informed choice. Personally I have chosen to live in the Philippines which is always a precarious existence but so far it has worked for me with only a few minor hiccups. There will never be one perfect system and of course what works for one couple may not work for another but at the end of the day at least after reading this article you will be in a better position weigh up the various advantages and decide which is the best option for you and your girl (lbfm).
